Nikon acquires RED Digital Cinema

In a move that came as a surprise, Nikon has announced the (strategic) acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, allowing Nikon to broaden its horizons into the digital cinema camera market.

With the purchase, RED Digital Cinema effectively becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nikon, allowing Nikon to properly enter the cinema camera market, while at the same time leveraging RED’s already stellar reputation in the industry.

Until this announcement, Nikon was lagging far behind Sony and Canon in this market segment, due to it not having its own dedicated cinema camera line.

The acquisition gives Nikon access to RED’s unique image compression technology, colour science and wealth of knowledge while at the same time providing RED access to Nikon’s far greater R&D budget to help them further develop the distinctive products they are already known for.

RED Digital Cinema was established in 2005 quickly gaining a positive reputation thanks to its innovative products, such as the original RED One 4K and the cutting-edge V-Raptor X and proprietary RAW compression technology.

Multiple blockbuster movies and television shows have been shot on RED cameras including: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, Captain Marvel, The Queen’s Gambit, Peaky Blinders, Frozen Planet II, Squid Game, and Mindhunter.
