Sony has just launched the new FE 8-14mm f/3.5 Fisheye G, its very first E-mount fisheye zoom (and the first Sony fisheye of any sort in while) spanning circular to dramatic diagonal perspectives.
This is a niche product, for sure, inherently somewhat limited in appeal, but for those who appreciate this genre of photography and this type of lens, it’s bound to exceed expectations and deliver some interesting results.
To be clear, what you get with this lens is a circular fisheye effect at the 8mm end and a more natural-looking diagonal fisheye perspective at 14mm. It functions less like a proper zoom than two lenses operating in one.
But that dual versatility opens up a world of creative possibilities, with a reliably constant f/3.5 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range and Sony G build quality to boot.
And there isn’t much competition for such a specialized piece of glass either. The E-mount Laowa 8-15mm f/2.8 Fisheye leaps to mind as one of the few other similar offerings that comes close.
