Sony announces three new APS-C wide angle lenses

Sony has dropped three new wide angle E-Mount APS-C lenses, the SEL 11mm f/1.8, SEL 15mm f/1.4 G and the SEL PZ 10-20mm f/4.0 G Power Zoom lens.

Sony says that all three lenses have been designed with hybrid photo/video content creators who create with Sony APS-C cameras such as the a6000 series or Alpha ZV-E10 camera in mind.

SEL 11mm f/1.8 – Pricing and Availability at Vistek

The SEL 11mm f/1.8 (35-mm full-frame equivalent: 16.5 mm) is a lightweight, ultra-wide-angle large aperture prime lens that Sony says is ideal for capturing video content.

It features a 7 bladed aperture and a minimum focus distance of 12.1 cm (4.8 in) when focusing manually or 15 cm (5.9 in) when using auto focus.

The maximum magnification is 0.2x with manual focus and 0.13x with autofocus allowing you to get up close and personal, while still keeping a smoothly defocused background.

There are three aspherical elements to suppress chromatic aberration and colour fringing and it’s two linear motors provide fast, precise AF and tracking performance.

As a new addition to Sony’s  G-Series of lenses, the SEL 15mm f/1.4 G (35-mm full-frame equivalent: 22.5-mm) offers a few more pro-level features than the SEL 11mm lens.

One of features those is the near silent focusing thanks to it’s two linear motors and another is the higher-end optics that are used in the lens.

Speaking of optics, the lens includes three aspherical elements to suppress chromatic aberration and colour fringing.

It features a 7 bladed aperture and a minimum focus distance of 17 cm (6.8 in) when focusing manually or 20 cm (7.9 in) when using auto focus.

The maximum magnification is 0.15x with manual focus and 0.12x with autofocus allowing you to get up close and personal, while still keeping a smoothly defocused background.

The lenes also features several on-body controls such as a de-clickable aperture ring, MF/AF switch and focus hold button.

SEL PZ 10-20mm f/4.0 G Power Zoom – Pricing and Availability at Vistek

Billed as “the world’s smallest and lightest constant F4 ultra-wide-angle APS-C power zoom lens” the SEL PZ 10-20mm f/4.0 G Power Zoom “offers outstanding mobility and superb image quality for both stills and movies.”

The lens itself is just 55 mm (2.17 in) in length and weighs a mere 178 grams (6.3 oz).

It features an internal zoom and focus system so that the lens does not change in length when zooming or focusing providing a stable centre of gravity, ideal for vlogging and gimbal-mounted shooting.

The 10 mm (35 mm full-frame equivalent: 15 mm) focal length at the wide end of the zoom range allows for  extremely wide angles of view, meaning you can easily capture scenes that are epic in scale.

There are three aspherical elements that suppress field curvature and astigmatism and an ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical element to reduce chromatic aberration.

It boasts a minimum focus distance of 13 – 17 cm (5.1 – 6.7 in) when focusing manually or 20 cm (7.9 in) when using auto focus.

The new electronic power zoom system instantly converts zoom ring rotation to actual zoom operation and the zoom lever allows for super-slow constant-speed zooms that are more difficult to achieve when using the manual zoom option.

Sony says that the zoom can also be controlled remotely from the optional GP-VPT2BT grip, RMT-P1BT remote commander or the Imaging Edge Mobile application.

The lens features two linear motors to ensure fast, quiet, low-vibration auto focus that is able to smoothly tracks subjects when shooting high-frame-rate movies as well as reliably follow fast-moving subjects when shooting stills continuously at high speed.
