Nikon Z 5: New Full-Frame, Feature Rich Entry-Level Mirrorless Camera

The new Nikon Z 5 is a 24.3-megapixel, full-frame, “entry-level” mirrorless camera that includes dual UHS-II SD card slots, in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and more. Nikon has also announced a new NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 zoom lens that they are calling their smallest full-frame lens to date.

The Nikon Z 5 features a FX-format, 24.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, fast EXPEED 6 image processor and in-body image stabilization that can reduce camera shake by up to 5-stops.

Thanks to the EXPEED 6 processor, the Z 5 is able to capture images at up to 4.5 frames per second with full autofocus and metering capabilities even at the fastest frame rate.

And with a fast shutter speed of up to 1/8000, the Z 5 can capture fast-moving subjects with ease making it ideal for fast-action sports and wildlife applications.

The ISO range of up to 51,200 (expandable to 102,400), greatly reduces noise helping to keep images sharp and relatively noise free in low-light situations.

Dual UHS-II Card Slots

The 273 on-sensor AF points cover nearly the entire frame and providing quick, accurate, subject tracking  as well as Eye-Detection AF capabilities for both humans and animals.

There is also a silent photography mode that will appeal to wedding and other photographers looking to capture distraction free moments.

Unlike the more expensive Z 6 and Z 7 cameras that have single XQD card slots, the Z 5 is equipped with fast, more accessible dual UHS-II card slots.

The Z 5 also features 4K UHD/30p (with a 1.7x crop) or 1080/60p (full-frame) video capture and features optical VR image stabilization, electronic vibration reduction focus peaking and a new Time-Lapse Movie mode. You can also utilize the 20 different creative picture controls, all visible in real-time while shooting video.

Build wise, the Z 5 features the same magnesium alloy shell as found on the Z 6 and Z 7 although there is more plastic used on the body. That being said, the Z 5 remains dust and moisture sealed to the same degree as its more expensive siblings.

The control buttons and dials are laid out logically and will be very familiar to Nikon users giving them the ability to pick up the Z 5 and start shooting as if they were on any other Nikon camera.

The Z 5 will work with all Z-Mount lenses and with the optional Mount Adapter FTZ you will also be able to use over 90 older F-Mount lenses as well.

Tilting LCD Screen

Rounding out the exterior features is a hot shoe that is fully compatible with the Nikon Speedlight wireless lighting system, a 3.69 million dots OLED viewfinder, 3.2-inch 1040K-dot high resolution tilting touchscreen and USB-C port.

The USB-C cord also means that the Z 5 can be used as a webcam*, making the camera a great option for modern vloggers, influencers and gamers who are looking for a high-quality livestreaming option other than a traditional webcam.

*When using Nikon’s upcoming beta webcam utility (expected August 2020), an external microphone will also be required.

Finally, the Z 5 is powered by Nikon’s new EN-EL15c battery, which they say will provide up to 490 shots or 120 minutes of movie recording. The Z 5 is also backwards compatible with older EN-EL15 batteries but will provide fewer shots per charge.
