Compact, lightweight and easy to operate, the entry-level Canon EOS Rebel T8i remains a perennial favourite among digital-photography beginners, devoted hobbyists and growing families eager to capture everyday moments.
The latest update in this series – the EOS Rebel T8i – ensures that Canon will keep that marketplace securely cornered while simultaneously targeting a new demographic segment as well: vloggers and social media mavens looking to step up and away from the limits of smartphone photography.
In many respects, the new Rebel looks and feels little changed over its most recent predecessor, the EOS Rebel T7i, and that’s just fine. Ironically for something called Rebel, the line-up’s popularity endures largely because of its adherence to crowd-pleasing features and functions.

So what’s changed? This model uses a powerful new DIGIC 8 processor to fire up an impressive 7 fps of continuous shooting and – also new – 4K video capture (including 24p). Autofocus now employs eye tracking when shooting in Live View and face tracking through the optical viewfinder. On the back, there’s a new AF-on button and a handy Quick Control Dial. Battery life has been boosted to 700 shots per charge.
It’s also the first EOS DSLR with vertical video output capability. And, now with multiple connectivity options, including Bluetooth and WiFi, you can see why this new model will appeal to vloggers and anyone typically uploading their content to social media platforms.
Canon has played it safe with this new model, offering consumers a modest step forward rather than a giant leap into uncharted territory. But with the T8i, the Rebel’s enduring success is assured for the foreseeable future among a broad swath of the population that still appreciates the value of a solid, no-nonsense DSLR.
