Nikon is sure to capture the attention of the photographers with the highly anticipated release of their latest powerhouse, the Nikon Z8.
Incredibly, Nikon has somehow managed to cram all of those features (all of which are inherited from the Z9) into a reengineered body that is approximately 30% smaller than the Z9.
Developed as a hybrid camera for both photo and video applications, it’s the video features that really help to make this camera such a powerhouse.
8K Video Capability:
The Nikon Z8 is capable of up to 8K 30p recording and can record both 12-bit N-RAW and 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 HQ video in-camera, virtually eliminating the need for an external recorder.
It also offers multiple 4K options including the ability to record oversampled 24p and 30p footage as well as 120p with sound to create unique ultra smooth slow motion movies.
Recording time varies depending on the resolution, allowing for up to 125 minutes when recording in 4K UHD/60p and up to 90 minutes when shooting in 8K UHD/30p.
To compliment it’s video capabilities, the Z8 also boasts built-in 24-bit linear PCM sound recording and can be paired with an eternal microphone mounted to the multi shoe adaptor and connected via the 3.5″ audio in jack.
For even more flexibility, the Z8 can also be paired with the Tascam Digital Adapter, allowing a wide range of professional XLR microphones to be used instead.
The Z8 also offers a range of professional-grade video features, including focus peaking, zebra patterns, and log shooting options.
Advanced Autofocus and Subject Tracking
Like the Z9, the Z8 features an advanced 493 point autofocus system capable of tracking and locking on to a variety of subjects including, people, pets, birds and vehicles.
There is also a new dedicated airplane detection mode which provides more powerful detection and tracking performance when shooting airplanes in almost an situation.
The AF system also utilizes deep learning AI technology and combines subject detection and 3D tracking allowing it to continuous track even the fastest and most erratic of subjects.
Like the Z9, the Z8 has low light subject detection and AF capabilities down to -6.5 EV and with Starlight Mode activated, can focus all the way down to -9 EV.
Stills Shooting
The Z8 boasts outstanding features for photographers as well by combining the 45.7-megapixel sensor with Nikon’s exception EXPEED 7 image processor to offer exceptional colour rendering, dynamic range, and overall image quality.
Thanks to the lighting fast processor, the Z8 is able to offer near silent burst shooting at up to 20fps for full-resolution RAW and JPEGS, up to 30 fps for JPEGS, up to 60fps for cropped DX format JPEGS and up to 120fps for 11-megapixel JPEGS, even in low light, with minimal noise.
The Z8 is also able to shoot in a 10-bit HEIF file, which utilizes 10-bit rich tonal gradation, and offers roughly the same output file size as JPEG but with approximately one billion more colours.
It also features Pre-Release Capture, which allows the capture of images up to one second before the shutter-release button is fully pressed and the advanced image stabilization system helps to ensure crips clear images, even in challenging shooting conditions.
Other Features
The Z8 features a magnesium alloy body, weather sealing and logically placed controls as well as a secure and ergonomic grip.
There are Dual CFexpress/XQD and SD card slots that provide plenty of options for both photographers and videographers alike.
Connections include a plug-in power support stereo mini-pin input jack, stereo mini-pin output jack, Type A HDMI connector, built-in 10 pin remote terminal, Type C USB connectors, a single USB data connector (SuperSpeed USB) and a single USB Power Delivery connector. Wireless connectivity is possible using Bluetooth and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
The Z8 is also the first Nikon camera to support USB-C to Ethernet connectivity via a USB Communication Terminal.
