New Atomos Ninja series ProRes monitor-recorders announced

Atomos has announced the next generation of their ultra popular Ninja V monitor-recorder series, the Atomos Ninja and the Ninja Ultra.

While the exterior of both the Ninja and Ninja Ultra models are virtually identical to previous models (other than a new “camo” inspired colour), there have been big upgrades made under the hood.

Both new models offer improved hardware performance thanks to the completely overhauled AtomOS 11 operating system.

In addition to boosted performance, AtomOS 11 adds a slew of new features including, EL Zone exposure referenced colourized image, ARRI False Colour, and new scheduled playback & recording tools.

Both models also boast additional standard codecs, including: 6K/30 ProRes RAW, ProRes, DNxHD as well as H.265 (previously only available as a paid option).

Ninja Ultra

While the Ninja model is targeted primarily at owners of DSLR and mirrorless cameras, the Ninja Ultra is built to get the most out of camera to cloud technology and leans into cinematic workflows with Atomos Connect.

In addition to 6K/30 ProRes RAW, ProRes, DNxHD and H.265, the Ultra version can also record 8K/30 ProRes RAW footage from compatible cameras.

It also supports simultaneous recording of full-quality files to ProRes RAW up to 4K 60p and HD 60p to H.265 as well as automatic matching filenames and timecode and record from ARRI, Canon and RED cameras.

Note: Atomos says that support for additional cameras will be available soon.

The Ultra also features a new 4K camera to cloud mode that allows users record and upload much higher quality bitrate H.265 video with higher framerates.

Note: H.265 files are half the size of H.264 media, making them small enough for camera to cloud workflows but also ideal for immediate use on social media, sports reporting or news gathering.

Atomos Connect

The Atomos Connect expansion module can be connected to either version to enable a new technology called Atomos RemoteView. This new feature will allow users to wirelessly share live views from their Atomos screens with other Atomos monitors, as well as with iPads, Macs and Apple TVs.

Atomos also says that this will make remote monitoring of the on-set action from anywhere in the world possible.

Note: When paired with Ninja Ultra, the Atomos Connect module provides a lower latency, higher throughput and more stable connection with Wi-Fi 6E.

Finally, Atomos says that both of the new Ninja models are backwards-compatible with their predecessors, Ninja V and Ninja V+, meaning that all Atomos and third-party accessories can continue to be used with the new products.
