Tamron 20-40mm zoom now in Z mount

The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is now available in Nikon Z mount alongside its earlier Sony E-mount counterpart.

Designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 is a compact, lightweight, constant-aperture standard to wide-angle zoom lens that lends itself readily to a broad range of practical applications.

The lens features moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element.

At first glance, the 20-40mm focal range might seem a bit odd, but it definitely has its uses.

The ultra-wide 20mm end is ideal for giving landscapes a dynamic sense of depth. The 40mm length is perfectly suited to capturing everyday snapshots, as well as travel and portrait photography.

With a minimum object distance (MOD) of just 0.17m and a 1:3.8 maximum magnification ratio at the 20mm wide end, the lens can also be put to excellent use in shooting wide macro photography – you can get incredibly close to your subject while encompassing the surrounding environment as well.

Although optimized for full-frame cameras, it also functions as a versatile zoom with a 30-60mm full-frame equivalent when mounted on an APS-C mirrorless camera.

Like its predecessor, this lens features 12 elements in 11 groups, including four low dispersion elements, two molded glass aspherical elements and a hybrid aspheric.

The VXD in its name stands for Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive, which is the linear motor focus mechanism that drives the high-speed, high-precision AF system and lets you capture your subjects smoothly and accurately when shooting both stills and video.

The 9-blade rounded diaphragm helps to maintain smooth-edged background highlights and soft bokeh.

Identical to its E-mount older sibling in many respects, the new Z-mount model also features a USB-C port near the rear, allowing you to connect it to the Tamron Lens Utility program for custom adjustments and firmware updates going forward.
