Sigma has just launched the 50-120mm f/2.8 DC OS Contemporary, a large-aperture telephoto zoom for APS-C cameras packing superb optical performance into an exceptionally compact body.
Let’s put that into perspective: this lens weighs just 390g and boasts roughly a 75-180mm equivalent zoom range with a constant f/2.8 aperture.
No other constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens built for APS-C sensors comes close to matching the ultralight weight and compact size of the Sigma 50-120mm f/2.8 DC OS Contemporary.

Available in Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF mounts, this new lens completes Sigma’s ultra-compact f/2.8 APS-C zoom trio, joining the 10-18mm f/2.8 and 18-50mm f/2.8 launched in recent years and now spanning everything from ultra-wide-angle to telephoto.
This lens’s svelte proportions are matched by a minimalist design and streamlined body: Sigma achieved this in part by removing extra switches like focus mode and AFL buttons to keep the lens nice and light.
This also gives the lens an interface that’s easy to understand and operate despite its superior functionality and performance.
The barrel does however sport a zoom ring and focus ring, and the Sony and Fujifilm versions also have a dedicated aperture ring (the RF version has a control ring instead).

The optical design incorporates 18 elements in 13 groups, including one FLD element, three super-low dispersion elements and four aspherical elements.
Among other benefits, this arrangement is designed to limit focus breathing when shooting video. The lens also features 11 rounded aperture blades to deliver pleasantly circular bokeh.
Combined with Sigma’s latest stabilization tech, the lens uses a High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) AF motor to provide 6.5 stops of stabilization at the wide end and up to 4.5 at telephoto length.
Thankfully, the Sigma 50-120mm f/2.8 DC OS Contemporary features a dust- and splash-resistant structure with weather sealing at key operational points.
It also has as a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element, but this lens isn’t strictly waterproof. You can feel comfortable shooting with it in light rain, but it’s wise to seek cover in heavy downpours. Take good care of it. This one’s a keeper.
