For anyone familiar with Sigma’s highly regarded ART series of high-performance lenses, any addition to the lineup deserves a closer look, and the latest – the new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN prime lens – is no exception. Designed for use with compact mirrorless models and available in E- and L-mount versions, it’s perfect for everyday use and especially handy for portraits.

The first thing you’ll probably notice is that bright large aperture, which gives this lens unparalleled depth-of-field possibilities and delivers the kind of exquisite bokeh that makes a subject truly stand out. Coupled with the lens’s high resolving power that spans an entire image from the centre to the edges, you can be sure to maintain essential sharpness within the area of focus, even when shooting in backlit conditions.

Along with five special low-dispersion elements and one aspherical lens, the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART also incorporates the latest high-refractive index glass to correct aberrations that typically can’t be handled by the corrective functionality in a camera itself, rendering sharply detailed images with no colour bleeding, even at the maximum aperture.

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART introduces some new functionalities, including an iris ring-lock switch that prevents the ring from moving unintentionally during shooting. There’s also a focus mode switch on the lens body and an AFL button that allows various functions to be assigned from a camera body.

This lens uses a high-speed AF stepping motor system that’s not only optimized for both phase-detection and contrast AF, but it has also allowed Sigma to rein in the overall size of the lens body itself, one of its main selling features. Dust- and splash-proof, the lens boasts the typically excellent build quality you’d expect from a specimen of this caliber. And with its pleasantly portable proportions, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART lens will fit nicely in your camera bag and is bound to become the one in your arsenal you’ll want to take with you everywhere.
