Sony’s Playing the Long Game with Two New Super Telephoto Lenses

In news that should excite both professional sports and wildlife photographers, Sony has added two new super telephoto lenses to their full-frame FE lens line-up, the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS and the FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS.

The smaller of the two lenses, the FE 200-600mm measures 318mm (1ft) in length and weighs 2.1kg (4.9lbs) without the tripod foot attached.

The lens is both dust and moisture resistant and features built-in (3-mode) optical stabilization, an internal zoom mechanism (which means it’s length remains the same even at full zoom), 11 circular aperture blades and a Direct Drive SSM autofocus motor to ensure smooth, precise and quiet focusing.

It’s 24 elements are arranged in a new optical design and include 5 extra-low dispersion glass elements and an aspherical element and Sony’s Nano AR coating which helps to suppress unwanted reflections, glare and/or ghosting.

If you want an even greater range, the FE 200-600mm can be easily paired with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x tele-converters extending its reach to a maximum of 840mm at f/9 (1.4x) or 1200mm at f/13 (2.0x) respectively.

Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens

Perfect for wildlife and more, this 200–600mm super-telephoto zoom can reach as far as 840mm or 1200mm with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, with full G lens quality and AF performance. Aspherical and ED glass elements achieve superb resolution throughout the zoom range, while Sony’s Nano AR Coating cuts flare and ghosting. The bokeh is gorgeous, too.

The FE 600mm GM is a massive lens, measuring 449mm (1.5ft) in length and weighing (albeit a shockingly light) 3.04kg (6.71lbs) making it the world’s lightest in it’s class, ever so slightly beating out Canon’s EF 600mm lens.

The 600mm also features dust and moisture resistance, built-in (3-mode) optical stabilization, 11 circular aperture blades and an internal zoom mechanism.

The autofocus is powered by two extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors that provide fast, precise autofocus and subject tracking and are supported (when set to MODE 3*) by specially designed motion algorithms to minimize lag and instability in addition to controlling noise levels.

*Currently, MODE 3 is only supported by the latest a9/a7R III and a7 III firmware versions

There are 24 elements that includes a large extreme aspherical (XA) element to suppress “all common telephoto lens aberrations,”, and three fluorite elements that will minimize chromatic aberration and colour bleeding. As with the 200-600mm lens, Sony has applied its Nano AR coating to suppress any unwanted reflections, glare or ghosting in images.

Because of the sheer diameter of the front element, Sony has placed a drop-in filter slot close to the lens mount, which allows for circular 40.5mm ND and other filter types (including the VF-DCPL1 drop-in circular polarizing filter) to be used.

There are also a number of hard controls located on the lens including, 4 customizable focus-hold buttons which can also be programmed to control different features, a full-time DMF switch to engage manual focus at any point and a focus ring that features Linear Response MF for manual focus fine tuning.

The FE 600mm is also fully compatible Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x tele-converters extending its reach to a maximum of 840mm at f/5.6 (1.4x) or 1200mm at f/8 (2.0x) respectively.
