Introducing the Sony VENICE 2 Extension System Mini

David WrightBy David WrightMarch 26, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read
    VENICE 2 Extension System Mini

Significantly smaller and lighter, the new Sony VENICE 2 Extension System Mini is designed with portability and agility in mind. Aimed at professional cinematography and commercial filmmaking, it’s ideal for shooting handheld, in tight spaces and mounted on a gimbal.

Designed exclusively for use with the VENICE 2 compact cine cam, this new modular extension follows in the footsteps of the Sony Rialto Camera Extension System 2 with enhanced features and some important tweaks.

VENICE 2 Extension System Mini ComponentsThe first big difference you’ll notice is the ultra-compact design. The Extension System Mini measures just 63.9×103.2x 60.2mm and weighs just 0.54kg with the E-mount attached or roughly 1.05 kg with the PL mount adapter. That’s about 70% less bulk that its predecessor.

The detachable cable is also constructed from a thinner, more flexible material. This not only makes it easier to position the sensor during setup, but it can also be disconnected from the sensor, giving you extra wiggle room when routing the cable in tight spaces even before connecting the sensor head. The cable’s enhanced flexibility just makes for overall easier handling in challenging environments.

Individual drop-in ND Filters can be inserted into the sensor head block to control exposure.

The new extension system also makes it easier to control exposure using individual drop-in ND filters that can be inserted straight into the sensor head block. The unit comes equipped with a set of filters spanning clear to 2.4, and additional filters can be purchased separately as needed.

The real beauty of this extension system is its ability to capture cinematic footage with a powerful 8.6K full-frame VENICE 2 sensor built into the sensor head block. It’s compatible with both existing VENICE 2 versions – the 8K and 6K models* – meaning that VENICE 2 6K owners can now shoot with the same stunning 8.6K sensor quality and all the freedom and other advantages this nimble new system affords.

*This requires VENICE 2 V4.0 firmware, however, which Sony plans to make available in August 2025.
