The new Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS super-telephoto zoom lens is superbly designed to maximize the potential of Sony’s most advanced E-mount camera bodies, including the new α7R VI.

This is actually an updated version of the similarly named FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS super-telephoto zoom launched in 2017. The biggest difference leaps out immediately.
The variable f/4.5-5.6 aperture has been replaced with a constant f/4.5 maximum aperture on the newer model – but there are other important upgrades today’s professional shooters will no doubt also welcome.
The constant maximum aperture not only offers faster performance at the long end but also contributes to a more portable overall design.
Ideal for wildlife, birds, sports, photojournalism and other applications involving distant subjects, this lens also benefits from a lightweight inner-zoom design for stress-free handling combined with comprehensive controls calibrated to meet professional needs.
Autofocus speeds are roughly three times faster than that of its predecessor, along with a 50% boost in tracking performance. Subject tracking is noticeably more accurate.

You can count on the internal zoom mechanism to keep the overall length of the lens unchanged during operation, which also maintains a consistent centre of gravity and makes for reliable ease-of-use when mounted on a tripod or gimbal.
The dust- and moisture-resistant barrel sports four programmable focus-hold buttons and a focus mode switch; the customizable function ring can be assigned to adjust and control a range of settings.
Leaving no stone unturned, the lens boasts a removable tripod collar that’s easy to align when rotating between horizontal and vertical orientations, and the included lens hood features a filter window that comes in super-handy when adjusting filters.
