GoPro says its new MISSION 1 Series boasts the world’s smallest, lightest and most rugged 8K and 4K Open Gate cinema cameras currently available. Does it live up to the claim?

Although GoPro is best known for its HERO cameras optimized for action sports and POV capture, the new MISSION 1 cameras are designed specifically for filmmakers and creators.

“With the launch of the MISSION 1 Series,” says senior vice president of product Pablo Lema, “GoPro is entering the premium end of the digital imaging market in a significant way.”

The MISSION 1 PRO features a new 50MP 1-inch sensor and a newly developed GP3 processor.

This is considered the flagship model of the MISSION 1 Series, capable of 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p960 16:9 video capture, as well as 8K30 and 4K120 Open Gate 4:3 video capture, plus 50MP RAW photo capture.

The MISSION 1 PRO features a new 50MP 1-inch sensor and a powerful new GP3 processor, together enabling category-leading resolutions, frame rates, runtimes and thermal performance.

The integrated lens provides a 159-degree field of view. Ruggedly built and designed to perform in challenging conditions, the MISSION 1 PRO is waterproof to depths of up to 20m without the need for a housing.

“The MISSION 1 Series is designed to go to hell and back,” says Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO, “and that’s exactly where our customers are going to take them.”

Among its other notable features: timecode sync for multi-camera productions, four built-in mics to record stereo sound with support for 24-bit MP4 and 32-bit float to reduce clipping, plus wireless audio support via Bluetooth.

The MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition comes bundled with a two-in-one point-and-shoot grip.

The MISSION 1 PRO comes with a lens hood to help reduce glare and lens flares, and it features versatile mounting options thanks to built-in mounting fingers and 1/4-20 mounting threads.

Offering all the above and then some, the MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition comes bundled with a two-in-one point-and-shoot grip and also includes cold-shoe mounts, 1/4-20 magnetic latch mounting and mounting fingers.

The ergonomic handgrip transforms the MISSION 1 PRO into a classic handheld camera, enabling easy one-handed shooting, and the camera cage features mounting points allowing for the attachment of additional accessories.
