EOS R5 C: Canon’s 8K “True Hybrid” Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

Canon has announced what they are calling a “true hybrid” full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R5 C RF-mount 8K camera that boasts video formats and features normally found on Cinema EOS cameras, while keeping select still capabilities from the original EOS R5.

In their press release Canon’s Tatsuro Kano states “The EOS R5 C squarely takes aim at providing end-users with a solution that can tackle all facets of the ever-demanding multimedia and content production landscape. Canon is confident this all-in-one solution can help improve the workflow for a variety of content creators.”

EOS R5C Active Cooling System

When the original EOS R5 camera was released it was heralded as a powerhouse camera, capable of 8K RAW up to 30p recording. However, as users were soon to learn, there was an overheating issue which caused the camera to shut down after a short amount of time.

Canon addressed the issue with firmware updates which helped to alleviate the problem, but didn’t really solve it.

Now, with the release of the EOS R5 C, Canon looks like they are looking to put that issue to rest.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the R5 C is that the body is quite a bit thicker than the original. The reason for this, is the addition of a large active cooling system.

With this system in play, Canon says the the EOS R5 C camera is capable of recording non-stop, 8K/60P without any interruption.

Additionally, the EOS R5 C can record High Frame Rate (HFR) video up to 120P at 4K resolution in 4:2:2 10-bit without cropping the sensor and using Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

When shooting in HFR, the EOS R5 C camera captures audio separately from video as a .WAV file, virtually eliminating the need for separate audio recording.



The EOS R5 C is also the first Canon camera to provide internal 8K (8192×4320) 60P Cinema RAW Light recording, a format previously only found in other Canon Cinema EOS cameras such as the EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II.

R5 C with Atomos Ninja V

For those unfamiliar, Cinema RAW Light captures the full dynamic range of the sensor providing video data with a cinematic look optimized for advanced grading and HDR which are then saved as more manageable file sizes than offered with Cinema RAW.

In addition, Cinema RAW Light now features three newly-developed modes, RAW HQ (high quality), RAW ST (standard quality) and RAW LT (light recording).

All three of these new modes offer 12-bit regardless of frame rate.

The EOS R5 C is also capable of recording 8K video in MP4 format, ideal for quicker delivery.

RAW output via HDMI for ProRes RAW recording is also supported when connected to an compatible external recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+.

Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded at up to 8K/30P with proxy data simultaneously being recorded to an SD card in-camera.

Multi-Function Shoe and Controls

It can also record 8K HDR in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and Perceptual Quantization (PQ) formats as well as Canon Log 3 and includes a Timecode terminal for multi-camera shooting situations.

For those looking to record VR footage, the EOS R5C is also fully compatible with Canon’s recently announced RF 5.2mm Dual Fisheye Lens.

Other features

The new multi-function shoe offers compatibility with both Canon and third party accessories such as external microphones (TASCAM CA-XLR2d-C XLR) and on camera lighting as well as 13 marked, assignable buttons for extra customization.

The EOS R5 C also features dual card slots: one CFexpress and one SD UHS-II and USB Video Class (UVC) connectivity, allowing it to be used as a streaming video camera right out of the box.

Finally, the new DC Coupler DR-E6C will provide the continuous power needed to the demands of shooting in Cinema RAW Light at high framerates.

Still Imaging Performance

As with the original EOS R5, the RC 5 is an impressive stills camera as well featuring a 45-megapixel high resolution, high-speed full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with the DIGIC X image processor and an ISO range of 100-51200; expandable to 102400.

The R5 C features Canon’s outstanding Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus and boasts high-speed continuous shooting of up to 12 frames-per-second (fps) in mechanical shutter mode and up to 20 fps in silent electronic shutter mode.

It also features EOS iTR AF X and 1,053 Automatic AF zones, Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, and the ability to track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection AF.

It also offers vehicle subject detection to track cars and motorcycles accurately, especially in race-type environments.

5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® connectivity is also included for the transfer of still images.
