DJI launches the Air 3

The new DJI Air 3 compact foldable drone comes equipped with two powerful cameras – a first for the Air series – and a host of additional improvements to take your aerial creativity to daring new heights.

Double vision
Packing a 1/1.3-inch-CMOS wide-angle camera and 3x medium-tele camera into its sleek, compact body, the Air 3 boasts the first dual-primary camera system for the Air series. While these cameras share the same 1/1.3-inch sensor size, they offer two different focal lengths – a 24mm equivalent for the wide-angle and 70mm equivalent for the medium-tele – as well as differing maximum apertures: f/1.7 and f/2.8, respectively.

Imagine the sweeping landscapes you’ll be able to capture with the wide-angle camera, then zooming in on a chosen subject with the medium-tele for a dramatic close-up. Both cameras deliver highly detailed 48MP photos, as well as 4K HDR video with support for 10-bit D-Log M and 10-bit HLG colour modes.

In 10-bit D-Log M mode, you can retain more of the highlight and shadow details in your shots to give yourself additional flexibility when editing. In 10-bit HLG, you get a higher dynamic range and the ability to achieve superb imaging results without the need for colour grading in post.

More power, more flight time
Compared with the previous-generation Air 2S, the Air 3 offers a 48% increase in flight time – that’s a total of 46 minutes aloft and greater freedom to explore the skies for some incredible shots.

The battery charging hub also supports an innovative new power-transfer function. When find yourself in a situation with limited charging options, just press and hold the function button: you’ll transfer the remaining power from multiple batteries into the one with the highest remaining power and give yourself a more fully charged battery.

Next-gen video transmission
With the new O4 video-transmission system, the Air 3 enjoys noticeably enhanced performance: a 20km maximum transmission range with added stability (a considerable boost above the previous-generation DJI O3’s 12km range for the Air 2S), plus a 1080p/60 fps maximum-quality live feed to deliver super-smooth viewing and operability.

Smooth moves
As with previous iterations, the familiar FocusTrack, QuickShots, MasterShots, and Hyperlapse flight modes still allow you to execute intricate maneuvers with incredible ease, but now there’s also a cool new Waypoint flight-routing feature – another first for the Air series – that lets you save flight routes and repeat the same movements at a later time.

Fly safely
The Air 3 retains many of the safety features that set this series apart, including an omnidirectional sensing system that enables the drone to perform necessary avoidance maneuvers independently and create an overall safer flight experience, especially helpful for beginners.

With its advanced Smart RTH (return to home) feature, the Air 3 automatically determines an optimal flight route back to the pilot while maintaining the advantages of omnidirectional obstacle sensing. Similarly, the FocusTrack feature offers updated tracking performance that can be combined with omnidirectional obstacle sensing.

Weighing in at 720g, the Air 3 is somewhat heavier than the Air 2S, meaning that you’ll need to register the craft and hold a valid drone pilot’s license in order to fly it in Canada. With that last detail tucked safely under your belt, you’re off to the races and the sky’s the limit.
