DJI Avata, compact, speedy and agile FPV drone

Looking like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, the DJI Avata is a compact, First Person View (FOV) drone that is built for speed and agility, yet according to DJI, is simple enough to control that just about anyone can fly it with ease.

The Avata features a stabilized 48-megapixel camera with Type 1/1.7 CMOS sensor with a f/2.8 aperture, that supports up to 4K ultra-wide-angle recording.

4K video is captured at up to 60fps while 2.7K video can be captured at up to 100fps or up to 120fps when using the new DJI FPV Googles V2.

The camera’s lens boasts a 155-degree angle of view for capturing epic wide-angle shots and footage can be recorded in Standard or D-Cinelike colour offering filmmakers options when grading footage in post.

The Avata features a top speed of 97.2 kph (27 metres per second) when flying in manual mode and a flight time of up to 18 mins on a full battery.

Flight range tops out at 11.6 kms however, the video transmission range maxes out at 10 kms from the controller.

It also boasts a ton of safety features including the aforementioned propeller guards and DJI’s GEO 2.0 geofencing system.

This system lets pilots know about nearby airspace restrictions and other potential hazards, as well as automatically preventing the drone from flying near any high-risk locations, such as airports.

The Avata also makes use of DJI’s AirSense ADS-B receiver system that warns pilots when other larger aircraft are nearby in addition to broadcasting DJI’s AeroScope signal that helps authorities to monitor airborne drones near sensitive areas.

It is also is equipped with both an Infrared Sensing System and a two-camera Downward Vision System that help the Avata to maintain position, hover more precisely and fly indoors or in other environments where satellite navigation is unavailable.

They are also used to identify unsuitable landing areas such as bodies of water or densely wooded areas.

The three different flight modes are designed to allow pilots of all skill levels to enjoy flying the Avata.

When using Normal mode, the Avata operates similarly to DJI’s DJI drones, and will hover in place using satellite navigation and/or the visual positioning systems (VPS) located on the bottom of the drone.

The Manual mode relies entirely on the pilot for control and is only available when paired with DJI’s new PFV Remote Controller 2 to provide a more “complete” FPV flying experience.

Lastly, Sport mode is kind of a hybrid of the two previous modes, providing some of the dynamic movement capabilities that Manual mode allows, while including some of the key safety features from the Normal mode, allowing pilots more room to explore their skills as they get used to flying the drone.

The Avata is available in three different options, the Drone by itself with no controller, the Fly Smart Combo and finally the Pro-View Combo.

In addition to the aircraft, the Fly Smart Combo includes the FPV Goggles V2, the Motion Controller and extra accessories such as extra propellers, extra batteries, etc.

The Pro-View Combo includes the DJI Goggles 2, Motion Controller, accessories such as extra propellers, and accessories for the goggles.
