Version 2.00 Firmware Update

It’s been almost a year since the last firmware update for the Sony FX6 and coming up on two years since the camera was announced.

The last update (ver. 1.10) was fairly modest, adding a couple of improvements and fixes, so what should we expect from the latest ver. 2.00 update?

Well, as it turns out, quite a bit! Especially if you use the FX6 with Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+ monitor/recorders.

Let’s take a quick look at the new features to expect and where and when you’ll be able to download the update.

When and Where to download the ver. 2.00 update

Sony has yet to provide a precise date for when the update will be available to download, only saying that it’s expected sometime later this month (January 2022).

Update: Firmware Update ver. 2.00 is now available to download via the Sony FX6 support page

Sony FX 6 Firmware Update: What’s New?

The most exciting change is support for 16-bit RAW output via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V or Ninja V+ monitor/recorders.

In order to enable this feature, you will first need to make sure that you are running the latest AtomOS version (ver.10.72.1 at time of publishing) or above on your Ninja V series device.

If you haven’t updated your Ninja V device, you can download the update here.

This is a big feature addition, as previous to this, the only way to record ProRes RAW to the Ninja V/V+ was via SDI using the AtomX SDI expansion module for those devices.

Note: This update supports 4.2K up to 60fps, if you want to record 4K RAW at up to 120p, you will still need to connect using the SDI module.

Other additions and updates

  • Improved Touch AF and Real-time Tracking – (You can also select the subject you want to focus on simply by touching the LCD monitor. FX6 can use Real-time Tracking to track the subject in real time even during manual focus.)
  • Breathing Compensation for consistent angle of view when focusing
  • 16-bit RAW output via HDMI
  • Bokeh control mode for easy adjustment of bokeh while minimizing exposure changes
  • HDR and SDR dual production for SR Live
  • Picture Cache Recording available while shooting in S&Q mode
  • 4-channel audio level meters
  • Enhanced FTP transfer speed
  • The recording media (Slot-A, Slot-B) can be selected by using Rec Button and Handle Rec Button for simultaneous recording mode
  • More settings which support touch operation with the touch panel
  • Multi Function Dial function is assignable to the Grip Dial and Handle Dual
  • Proxy file with 4-channel audio in metadata 17 – (Actual 4-channel audio is not recorded in proxy file. Metadata is created as 4-channel audio to match the audio channel count between a main clip and proxy file for editing with NLE software.)
