The DJI Mavic: DJI’s First Compact, Personal Flying Camera

DJI’s newest aerial imaging platform, the Mavic Pro, is their most portable drone yet. Weighing in at a paltry 1.62 lbs (including battery and propellers), it’s jam-packed with a bevvy of new features and improvements.

So let’s start off with the obvious…

The DJI Mavic is tiny, less than a foot long, and around 3 inches tall, meaning it will easily fit into a small backpack.

Don’t let its small size fool you though, this is one of the most advanced platforms that DJI has released so far.

Inside the compact body, DJI has placed 24 high-performance computing cores and an all-new transmission system which gives the Mavic a range of up to 7 kilometres.

The Mavic is packed with navigational aids, including 5 vision sensors, built-in GPS & GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and 2 ultrasonic range finders. To ensure that the Mavic keeps flying where you want it to, each of the key sensors has a back-up that kicks in if the main one fails.

The sensors are capable of detecting obstacles up 49ft away, and then automatically fly the Mavic around them, or if necessary, hover in place until you can manually fly the drone around them.

5 Cameras, GPS & GLONASS, 2 ultrasonic range finders

With the addition of the forward and downward facing sensors the Mavic is capable of driftless hovering when indoors, or in other places where GPS isn’t available.

Flight time is up to an impressive 27 minutes (depending on wind conditions) thanks to the Mavic’s intelligent flight lithium polymer batteries.

Max speed is 65 kph while in sport mode and its max ceiling is just over 16,000 ft.

The Mavic is controlled via the smaller remote designed for the unit that features and LCD screen with essential data and dedicated buttons for Return-to-Home and Intelligent Flight Pause. The LCD works with the OcuSync video link system giving the pilot a 1080p resolution live view.

Don’t feel like using the controller? You can also pilot the drone using your phone by using the app’s on-screen joysticks.

DJI is also announcing DJI Goggles that when worn allow you to fly the drone with an immersive 85-degree view in full 1080p, essentially giving you a bird’s eye view of the world.

The Mavic’s camera system is mounted on DJI’s smallest 3-axis gimbal to date and provides rock solid stabilization.

The camera itself is a 12-megapixel, 4K autofocus camera that is protected by a clear cover. The camera can also be flipped 90-degrees to shoot in portrait mode if desired.
