Slotting in between the FX3 and FX6 cinema line cameras, the new Sony FX5, draws not only from the from the technological lineage those two cameras, but also from the Venice and Burano, delivering a camera that feels not only familiar but also distinctly forward‑looking.

At the core of the FX5 is a new full‑frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, engineered to deliver 15+ stops of dynamic range and outstanding low‑noise performance in addition to providing faster readout, reduced rolling shutter, and improved tonal accuracy.

    Sony FX5 Fully Rigged

The sensor is paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 image processing engine, which incorporates an integrated AI processing unit, enabling advanced subject recognition, more reliable autofocus tracking, and improved performance in challenging lighting conditions.

In addition, the FX5’s autofocus system now interprets full body posture and head position, not just eye detection, resulting in more stable tracking during dynamic movement or low‑light scenarios.

With the FX5, Sony also introduces triple base ISO covering 800, 4000, and 12800 ranges respectively, giving filmmakers the flexibility to maintain optimal dynamic range across lighting situations from bright exteriors to dim interiors to night shoots.

Open Gate Recording and Internal X‑OCN RAW

Perhaps it’s safe to say that the FX5’s most transformative feature is its support for full‑sensor 3:2 Open Gate recording, a first for the FX series.

If you aren’t familiar, Open Gate acquisition allows creators to capture footage using the entire sensor area, providing greater range for anamorphic lenses, widescreen delivery formats, vertical‑first content, and reframing flexibility in post‑production.

Another significant upgrade is the camera’s ability to record 16‑bit X‑OCN RAW internally, virtually eliminating the need for external recorders.

In addition, the FX5 supports X‑OCN LT as well as the newly introduced X‑OCN C1 and C2 codecs, which are designed to reduce file sizes while preserving high‑end image quality, particularly advantageous for VFX‑heavy workflows and fast‑turnaround post pipelines.

The FX5 offers an impressive range of frame rates:

    • 5K up to 60p
    • 5K up to 120p (16:9)
    • 4K up to 120p
    • Full HD up to 240p

Sony has also equipped the FX5 with several refinements that directly address professional production needs including, a new Visible Light + IR sensor that enhances auto white balance stability, particularly in mixed lighting environments where traditional systems struggle.

Exposure and colour evaluation enhancements include, false colour, waveform, and vectorscope, tools that were previously limited to much larger, higher‑end cinema bodies such as the Sony Venice or Burano, allowing for more precise in-camera monitoring without having to rely on an external monitor/recorder.

Compact, Mobile, and Built for Real‑World Production

Reflecting Sony’s current focus on mobility and adaptability, the FX5 features a flat‑top compact body that provides greater flexibility for rigging situations including, handheld, gimbal, vehicle‑mounted, or tight‑space shooting.

The camera is fully compatible with the optional DVF-EL1 OLED EVF and Sony’s XLR‑H2 handle unit*, expanding its audio and monitoring capabilities for professional workflows.

*The XLR-H2 supports two XLR/TRS inputs, a 3.5mm stereo mini hack and up to 96 kHz/32bit float audio recording. It also supports independent 32bit WAV recording alongside video audio.
