DJI launches the Mic Mini 2

The second-generation DJI Mic Mini 2 has made its official launch, along with a colourful splash. As you’d expect, some things have changed while others haven’t. Let’s take stock and see who this new wireless microphone system is meant for.

The DJI Mic Mini 2 comes with a set of multicolour magnetic covers to match different outfits.

Starting with the obvious: unlike the original DJI Mic Mini clip-on transmitter, which comes only in black or white, the Mic Mini 2 arrives in a neutral shell and offers a selection of eight different magnetic covers in a range of colours – including hot pink, lavender and teal – “to match most outfits,” according to DJI.

This coincides with the launch of the Time series of magnetic front covers created in collaboration with renowned American-Chinese illustrator Victo Ngai and sold separately. Comprising four illustrations designed to capture various stages of life – spanning Dawn, Surge, Blaze and Glimmer – they supposedly correspond to each step of a creator’s audio journey.

This all sounds a bit gimmicky, for sure, but thankfully not all of the changes are so transparently superficial and cosmetic. No doubt, some presenters and content creators will appreciate having a mic that complements their attire or blends in inconspicuously, but it has to deliver quality audio too.

The beauty of the Mini Mic has always been its extreme portability, ease of use and impressive audio quality relative to its size and price. It’s considered the ideal grab-and-go solution for content creators and vloggers who need reliable audio without the bulk of conventional wireless systems.

And yes, we’re pleased to report, the Mini Mic 2 adheres to these core values and principles.

The Mic Mini 2 retains some of the original specs – including 48 kHz 24-bit audio, automatic anti-clipping and two-level noise cancellation – with battery life reaching up to 48 hours with a fully charged case.

The most welcome new addition is three voice tone presets: Regular, Bright and Rich. Regular is what you’d expect. Bright accentuates higher frequencies while Rich advances the lower ones to deliver warmer tones.

The two-level noise cancelling settings include Basic and Strong to accommodate quiet indoor spaces and loud outdoor locations, respectively.

With this second-generation launch, DJI has taken the popular Mic Mini in an interesting direction. Whether they’ve struck the right tone remains to be seen – and heard.
