Alpha Collective member Allison Anderson is a travel and lifestyle videographer and photographer with over 30 million video views on her YouTube Channel. Traveling solo, she documents her adventures around the world through videos, social media, and blog posts, and inspires others to seek out the adventures that call to them. Her top tip for other creators who want to travel alone? Find versatile gear.

    Streamlining Your Travel Kit

When Anderson first started solo traveling, she packed everything she could possibly fit into her bag. “…stuff that wasn’t really practical and it really weighed me down and it slowed me down,” she says. “And since then, I’ve really streamlined my bag. I’ve found versatile lenses that I can use in a variety of situations, and that has made travel so much easier.”

To cover a wide variety of focal lengths, she likes to pack several G Master zooms like the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II, Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master II and Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master. These versatile options help her capture a lot of what she sees on her solo adventures.

Making Travel Content In Your Own Backyard

If you can’t travel, Anderson says that’s OK – you can absolutely still create travel-style content. “You have to remember that the things around you would be travel for a lot of your audience. Your backyard is a destination for a lot of people who don’t live where you live.”

It’s all about how you frame out, and just getting out and doing it. “You don’t necessarily need to be traveling all the time to create travel-themed content,” she says. “Explore your own backyard, highlight the things around you that are interesting, and that can also be travel content.”
