With the launch of Panasonic’s new Lumix S 40mm f/2, photographers now have a perfect one-lens solution for a wide variety of creative applications.

Featuring a natural perspective similar to that of human vision, the 40mm focal length balances the wider field of view of a 35mm lens with the tighter one of a 50mm lens, making it the ideal choice for everything from portraits to street photography and landscapes.
And with a close focusing distance of just 30cm, it’s also suitable for tabletop photography of things like small objects, food and flowers.
The lens’s bright maximum aperture allows for soft bokeh effects and strong subject separation – especially desirable in portraiture – as well as the use of faster shutter speeds in low-light situations to keep images looking nice and clean without the need to push ISO drastically.
Boasting discreet pancake-lens proportions – roughly 40.9mm in length and weighing about 144g – this lens is a perfect match for the Panasonic Lumix S9 compact mirrorless and other similar L-mount models. It also shares the same 62mm filter diameter as the recently launched Lumix S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 zoom lens.

For added versatility, the lens packs some convenient customizable control functions, including a focus button on the barrel that can be assigned as a function button and can also be used to lock focus while pressed.
You can change the direction of the focus ring as well, and you can switch from linear to non-linear control when the focus mode is set to MF.
Focus-breathing suppression and micro-step aperture control round out its feature set, appealing to those shoot video, while a dust- and splash-resistant design plus a fluorine coating on the front element combine to make this a durable everyday lens you can take just about anywhere, anytime.
