With the launch of its new Instax Mini Evo Cinema, Fujifilm has taken a radical departure with this much-loved hybrid instant camera lineup – but it might not be exactly in the direction you’re thinking.

The ability to take photos and then select favourite shots to print out is one of the hallmarks of the Evo series, but this new hybrid instant camera can also capture video. And it’s both simpler and more complicated than it sounds.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t a true cinema camera in any sense of the word, but it does allow you to capture video clips up to 15 seconds long that can be reviewed instantly on the rear monitor.
You can then choose a scene to print with a QR code attached for immediate sharing – when the QR code is scanned with a smartphone and dedicated Mini Evo app, the video can be replayed or downloaded for posting on social media.
Using the app, you can also edit the video, combining multiple clips to create unique and eye-catching content, as well as add opening and closing templates.
With both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity built in, the camera supports faster transfers and lets you preview video and stills before sending.

In a nod to its own long and storied past in this realm, Fujifilm has designed the camera body in a classic style, complete with vertical handgrip, reminiscent of its groundbreaking FUJICA Single-8 8mm home-movie camera launched back in 1965.

Taking the retro theme one step further, the Mini Evo Cinema also features a handy analogue dial on its side that lets you scroll through various decades and apply evocative effects from each era.
Give your images a look inspired by 8mm film cameras of the 1960s, for instance, or the texture of colour CRT televisions from the 1970s, to name just two of 10 possible options.
But this is also more than just a “cinema” camera. In fact, Fujifilm is marketing it as a 3-in-1 camera that not only captures video and still images but also functions as a smartphone printer.
That’s a given with the Evo series, of course, but it’s reassuring to be reminded that this versatile new model really does have a lot to offer.
