Tamron’s 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telephoto zoom is now available in Nikon Z mount. This new lens joins the 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 and 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 to complete a trinity of specialized Z mount zoom lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Tamron also calls this G2 trio of lenses a daisangen, referring to a winning hand comprising three sets of dragon tiles in Japanese mahjong. Until now, the complete three-piece set of second-generation lenses was available only in Sony E mount.
Like its predecessors, this is a versatile fast-aperture zoom that combines compact size and a lightweight design to accentuate portability and facilitate handheld shooting.
In fact, this currently qualifies as the world’s smallest and lightest f2.8 tele-zoom lens. Together, the G2 trinity lenses weigh just 1,865g and span a total focal length range of 16mm to 180mm – all told, a practical and manageable addition to your camera bag.
And Z Series shooters will no doubt appreciate a welcome and comparatively affordable third-party alternative to the usual mix of available lens choices.

Well balanced in the hand, the 70-180mm f/2.8 VC G2 delivers an uncompromising level of image quality throughout the entire zoom range, allowing you to capture sharp, vivid detail in shots spanning close-up compositions and portraits to landscape photography and more.
At the wide end, the lens achieves a minimum object distance (MOD) of just 0.3m.
The lens relies on Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) image stabilization to suppress the effects of camera shake and the VXD linear motor focus mechanism to deliver highly responsive and quiet autofocus, now with improved fast and precise AF tracking performance as well.
Helpfully, it also supports the Tamron Lens Utility software that you can use to customize certain functions according to your own personal shooting style for both still photography and video using your PC or smartphone – the PC version also allows you to update your lens firmware as required.
