Gone are the days when going on a photo expedition meant months of travel, sleeping in uncomfortable tents in hostile environments and practically needing a small army of people to manage all of the gear. Thankfully, the Fogo Island Inn Photo Expedition is a far more luxurious experience…

Travel to one of the four corners of the Earth…

The Fogo Island 5-day Photo Expedition will take you to a place that has been labelled as one of the “Four Corners of the Earth”. Located off the north-east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and born of fire and stone, Fogo Island with it’s 400,000,000 year old windswept vistas, and iceberg laden waters has long been a magnet for photographers and nature lovers alike.

    A Photo Lover’s Paradise

Photographing, exploring and inhaling the unique sense of place of this island on the edge of the world: you will pursue the light, explore the hidden coastal regions and photograph the unique historic and contemporary architecture. In winter, herds of caribou, ice walls and the frozen crackled ocean dominate the landscape. In spring, glide across the waters, full of icebergs, teaming with life and under clouds of migrating birds. Working closely with internationally renowned and published photographer Alex Fradkin, you will be in a fully instructive and immersive experience that will endeavour to help transcend usual ways of looking into seeing and celebrating the extraordinary.

    Photo Workshop and Itinerary

The photo workshop will be comprised of lectures and presentations by the instructor on elements of light, composition, form and textures as it relates to the architecture of both the island and the of the buildings built upon these rocky shores.

Fogo Island BoatPrime hours for light will be spent outdoors in a photo workshop environment, with intensive and direct interaction with the instructor to help guide and gently push your way of seeing and photographing.

Evenings will be spent reviewing student’s work in a friendly open atmosphere of collaboration, and intensive encouragement in how best to improve your work and push the boundaries of the craft of photography and learning to truly “see”.

All skill levels of photographers, light seekers and lovers of exploration are encouraged to join me in what will be an incredible journey to the “Edge” and beyond.  Bring your camera, your love of place and culture openness to a truly unique life experience.

Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, off of one of the four corners of the earth. Every one of the 29 one-of-a-kind guest suites has dramatic floor to ceiling windows that open onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet, located less than 100 feet from your organic natural-fibre bed. Most suites have a wood-burning stove; all are furnished with quiet luxuries and hand-made furniture and quilts – a stimulating relief from the numbing uniformity of modern times. The award-winning inn is a community asset and 100% of operating surpluses are reinvested into the community.

FoodChef Murray McDonald: Air Canada En Route has selected the Fogo Island Inn as one of Canada’s best restaurants. “There’s a terrific survivalist spirit bursting out of chef McDonald’s kitchen, where most everything is made from scratch – not just bread and bacon but mustard and vinegar too.”

Chef McDonald says: “Back in the day, if you didn’t have a small farm, a garden, a root cellar and a store of preserves here, you starved,” He scours all corners of the 240-square-kilometre island for unexpected treasures. “Ninety-five percent of what’s in our kitchen, I know the hands that touched it, including my own.”

Sounds amazing so far right? Now for the really important details…
